Scent work is a great opportunity for your dog to use their natural talents searching for specific scents. As a handler, you learn to recognize their “alert” signal while the dog has a chance to lead you to the hidden scent. Dogs and handlers both enjoy this fun sport.
Scent Work is for all dogs…
If your dog has a nose, you need only find what truly motivates your dog to start you down the nose work path. For best results, bring a flat collar or harness and a 6' or longer leash. Don't forget to bring plenty of treats or your dog's favorite toy to motivate and reward them for a job well done. Join a class this week.
Teach your dog scent work skills. Once dogs learn to search for birch, anise, clove, and cypress, they’ll have the skills to learn to search for anything. Handlers will learn how to allow their dog to search without interfering and to recognize their dog’s natural alert or to train their dog to alert in a manner that is appropriate for their dog. Dogs will get experience on five elements – interior, exterior, container, vehicle and buried – plus AKC’s scent discrimination. Beginning and experienced dogs can be accommodated in this class. Dogs must not be aggressive. Instructor is an AKC Scent Work judge. Bring a reward that has value to your dog – soft treats, tug toy, etc. Dogs are trained on collars or harness, and lead.
