Training Tips – The Basics

These five tips will get you started on the right path to a successful training relationship with your dog.

  • CONSISTENT CUES
Your dog’s performance will become more reliable when you use consistent cues.  i.e. don’t alternate using the right and left hand to cue a stay, use the same hand.
  •  FOOT WORK
Walk briskly to keep your dog’s attention.  The more energy you show your dog, the more energy and attention your dog will give you.
  • POSTURE
Stand erect and look forward while heeling.  Leaning or looking back at your dog encourages lagging while heeling.
  • HEEL
Look at the ground 6-8 feet in front of you.  Your posture will communicate to your dog where you are going.
  • STRAIGHT HEEL
To avoid having your dog turn his front end into you and swing his back end away, feed him with your left hand while training.  This will avoid the “crab walk”.
