Training Tips – Perfecting Heeling

Here are some tips designed to help you get precise heeling and straight sits.

  • HEELING POSITION
If your dog forges ahead, hold your hand at your side instead of in front of your waist.
  • STRAIGHT HEEL
To avoid having your dog turn his front end into you and swing his back end away, feed him with your left hand while training.  This will avoid the “crab walk”.
  •  SLOW HEEL
Don’t walk so slow that your dog thinks you’re stopping and tries to sit. Maintain the same tempo as normal speed, just shorten your stride.
  • FOOT WORK DURING ABOUT TURN
Pivot in place on an about turn in order to allow your dog to maintain his heel position.

SITS WHILE HEELING
STRAIGHT SITS
Straight sits in heel position are best trained with a mirror, If your dog sits crooked in heel position, take a few steps forward to straighten his sit.
In the absence of a mirror, use a pvc frame to aid your dog in straight sits in heel position.

  • FAST SIT
Practice halting from a fast pace.
